Cisco 4000 Series: An Overview

The Cisco 4000 ISR family delivers application-aware services in the branch-office environment. These ISRs provide up to 2 Gb performance with extensive Layer 7 services, hosted internally, while maximizing OPEX savings.

Perfectly suitable for the medium- to large-sized enterprise, Cisco’s 4000 family brings unmatched performance and deployment flexibility to today’s market. This platform also supports several wired connectivity options.

Get your branch ready for digital with these top features:

  • Flexible deployment options.
  • Virtualization ready means you can host network functions or apps from anywhere at any time.
  • Network automation through Cisco Application Policy Infrastructure Controller Enterprise Module (APIC-EM) and Intelligent WAN (IWAN).
  • Integrated network services include WAN optimization, application optimization, intelligent caching, unified network communications and SD-WAN capabilities.
  • Branch protection across network and in the cloud through integrated router security. No separate appliance needed.
  • Encryption acceleration.
  • Voice- and video-capable infrastructure.
  • Call processing and other embedded services.

Cisco 4000 Series Specs

All routers can be Application Experience (AX)-enabled through SW for virtualized security, app performance and WAN optimization, delivered through a Cisco UCS server blade that is integrated into the router.

Cisco 4221 ISR

The first model in the family, the 4221 still features several embedded capabilities for IT departments expecting future growth. Excellent performance, security and flexibility are all earmarks of this model.

  • Scales from 35 Mbps to 75 Mbps
  • One RU desktop
  • Supports 8 GB maximum flash and 4 GB max DRAM

Cisco 4321 ISR

This model is based on Cisco’s ISR 4451-X capabilities and design, but is scaled down to a single CPU (SOC). The IOS-XE software infrastructure provides optimal performance and scalability by leveraging multi-core CPUs, feature inheritance, modularity, fault isolation and restartability.

  • Scales from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps
  • One rack unit with two total onboard WAN or 10/100/1000 LAN ports
  • 8 GB of maximum combined data/control memory, 16 GB of maximum flash memory

Cisco 4331 ISR

This model is based on Cisco’s ISR 4451-X capabilities and design, but is scaled down to a single CPU (SOC). The IOS-XE software infrastructure provides optimal performance and scalability by leveraging multi-core CPUs, feature inheritance, modularity, fault isolation and restartability.

  • Scales from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps
  • One rack unit with three total onboard WAN or 10/100/1000 LAN ports
  • 16 GB of maximum data/control and flash memory

Cisco 4351 ISR

This model is based on Cisco’s ISR 4451-X capabilities and design, but is scaled down to a single CPU (SOC). The IOS-XE software infrastructure provides optimal performance and scalability by leveraging multi-core CPUs, feature inheritance, modularity, fault isolation and restartability.

  • Scales from 200 Mbps to 400 Mbps
  • Two RU with three total onboard WAN or 10/100/1000 LAN ports
  • 16 GB of combined data/control memory and 16 GB of maximum flash memory

Cisco 4431 ISR

This highly scalable router only takes up one RU while still providing end users with four total WAN/LAN ports, optimal throughput, security and memory. Scaling up to 1 Gbps, this model is excellent for bigger branch environments handling a few hundred users at each site.

  • Scales from 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps
  • One RU with four total onboard WAN or 10/100/1000 LAN ports
  • 2 GB of maximum data plane memory, 16 GB of maximum control plane memory and 32 GB of maximum flash memory

Cisco 4451 ISR

The Cisco 4451-X features a multicore CPU architecture. Running modular Cisco IOS® XE Software, the 4451 intelligently adapts to the ever-changing needs of your branch environment, protects your network, and unifies communication and application services.

Separate control and data planes allow IT to deliver app-aware network services without sacrificing stability or performance during heavy network loads. End users can enjoy excellent CAPEX and OPEX savings thanks to the 4451’s ability to integrate app-aware services and scale performance without requiring a complete equipment upgrade.

  • Scales from 1 Gbps to 2 Gbps
  • Two RU with four total onboard WAN or 10/100/1000 LAN ports
  • 2 GB of maximum data plane memory, 16 GB of maximum control plane memory and 32 GB of maximum flash memory

Cisco 4000 Series Review

“Top choice for today’s branch offices.”

Router-Switch.com

“Out of the box, the router was in great condition. This is a very scalable router. We are planning on using them for sites between 100 and 300 users. Currently we are not planning on using the iWAN functionality, but this platform does allow us to leverage that feature in the future. The IOSXE platform doesn’t run all that different from standard IOS, but there are some command differences…”
