5 Top Barcoding Systems For Manufacturing

Barcoding systems in manufacturing allow for an array of benefits, including materials and equipment inventorying, shipment processing, and equipment tracking.

Those benefits and more translate to efficiencies that can directly boost a manufacturer’s bottom line. Holding inventory, for example, can cost an enterprise as much as 30% more than the inventory’s unit cost value.

If your manufacturing company is examining ways to eliminate financial waste, a robust barcode system will help. Here are five of the top barcoding systems for manufacturing.

1) Scandit

Scandit helps manufacturers capture, manage, and leverage real-time data thanks to its barcode scanning technology.

Based on the internet traffic and activity that the Scandit website generates, that support garners the Zurich-based company a good amount of attention.

Retailers represent a large part of the barcode market, and Scandit notes that retail giants such as Sephora, Louis Vuitton, and Levi Strauss & Co. rely on its technology. Manufacturers, however, have many reasons to consider Scandit. They include:

  • Order entry
  • Proof of delivery
  • Asset management
  • Shipping and receiving.

2) Cin7

Reviewers sharing their thoughts via Capterra give the Cin7 barcode scanning system a commendable 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Helping its rating: ease of use and swift reporting. It’s manufacturing module, however, is dinged for its shortcomings with high-volume production.

Having said that, manufacturers working within a more modest volume of production gain access to a system that offers production, warehouse, POS, and B2B eCommerce functionality. Also available from Auckland-based Cin7 is a healthy list of third-party integrations including Quickbooks Online and Salesforce.

3) Fishbowl

While the criteria aren’t clear, Fishbowl touts its position as “the No. 1 requested desktop manufacturing and warehouse management solution for QuickBooks.”

For manufacturing enterprises with established QuickBooks-related workflows, though, that alone may be the deciding factor in selecting a barcode system.

Like we saw with Cin7, a separate Capterra review highlights Fishbowl’s barcode system’s ideal transaction limit: the “low hundreds per day,” in this instance. More productive outlets will want to consider that during their selection process for barcoding systems in manufacturing.

Not that such concerns are enough to bring the Utah-based Fishbowl’s rating down; it still comes in at a solid 4 out of 5 stars. That’s despite the fact that “[t]heir support is quite effective but may be slower than you like ….”

4) Wasp Barcode

Speaking of features, Wasp Barcode offers a number of them for manufacturers. They include supply and material management, equipment and tool tracking, and employee tracking.

States one reviewer: “[Wasp Barcode has an] unbelievable interface that allows seamless transition from menu to menu. I would recommend this to any company.” Ease of use is a recurring theme among Wasp Barcode feedback, a welcomed aspect for feature-rich systems that can sometimes prove especially challenging to use.

5) Intuit Quickbooks Inventory

While it doesn’t boast the most memorable name of these barcoding systems in manufacturing, QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise for Manufacturing & Wholesale with Advanced Inventory does boast a rich feature list that includes:

  • Sales order and inventory management
  • Mobile inventory barcode scanning for receiving and picking
  • Customizable reports
  • Inventory, serial, lot, and bin location tracking
